Asmau Aliyu from NSUK Law Clinic: Reflection

My personal reflection during the OSIWA project has been intriguing, educative and somewhat disheartening. I once thought that the criminal justice system was perfect and was put into perfect procedures..but visiting the prisons and the court rooms told another different story in its entirety.
The case i handled was a civil case involving a meagre amount of money which cost the defendants (3) months in jail..no courts date or sitting nor freedom to the outside world..after so many returns to court just to seek redress and bail finally yielded results, they were granted bail and finally let out of the prisons..
I was finally relieved that they finally got access to justice but so many of them are still in prisons for offenses which could have been treated and redressed with community labour or small jail terms..with the support of NULAI and various law clinics we hope the system will be balanced and address the wrongs it ought to have addressed.
