Halima Mustapha Ramat from NSUK Law Clinic: Reflection

I am Halima Mustapha Ramat, a participant of the nulai project from Nasarawa State  university Keffi, it was the first ever project I had embarked on as a law clinician and it was one of  the most memorable time of my life. For so long I have always thought of prison inmates as criminals and crooks but on getting to the prison and after interviewing some inmates I realised things were not as I thought, I saw inmates whom were wrongly detained, inmates who had no level representation or money to afford any and for some they have lost hope of ever becoming free in there life. But with this project, it became a ray of hope for many inmates through the free legal representation and it also provide access to justice which the inmates deserve. I say a thumbs up to Nulai a job well done but more can be done e g. By improving the conditions of the prison and for the prisoners skills can be taught to them so as to prevent them from committing more crimes, in prisons most inmates tend to learn and get into more crimes after there release from prison because people see ex convicts as nothing but criminals who can do no good to the society but when they acquire skills of their own while in prison it will do more good and a source of fund can be organized for prisoner so that as they learn  the skill and are leaving prison money or equipments will be available for them to start up business to enhance their life and that prison is meant to serve as a corrective major not a place to learn more ways of killing and deceiving people this  will help in showing them that crime is not a way of life but a shortcut to prevention of freedom and life .
