OYABAMBI OLADAMOLA MOSES FROM UNILORIN LAW CLINIC: REFLECTION

The NULAI/OSIWA prison decongestion program as so far worth the time, energy and enthusiasm imputed for the achievement of thr program personally. The project has diverte my mind from its usual notion as to the my intention towards an accused persons to elbe nothing but criminals, to knowing that most alledged crimes were not actually committed by them, or they were just victims of circumstances.
    In order to ensure the effectiveness of the project, the project was splitted int three stages;
1, the project workshop
2, advocacy visit
3, prison visitation.
My experience at the workshop was an interesting one, project participants were introduced and enlightened to vital areas and concept of the project scope including familiarization with how to draft important documents and filing of the prison visitation form used to collate the detainees information.
I was opportune to join the law clinic on it’s advocacy visit to the office of the D.P.P, where we were warmly received and we were assured about the willingness and readiness of the D.P.P to support the law clinic with in the corpus of his powers.
   The first prison visitation was to the okekura prison, ilorin, where I interviewed two detainees, one as charged with theft and the other with assault and battery.
   In the past 7months of the project, i have learnt how to conduct interviews, draft affidavits, bail applications and i have been exposed to court proceedings.
   So far, i feel accomplished to participate in the NUAI/OSIWA prison decongestion project, as it has helped in achieving my dreams of laying impacts in the public.
  In concussion, I personally applaud NULAI/OSIWA for bringing up such innovation and supporting the project financially and requiring constant followup through plethora of reports. However a major setback as to the effectiveness  and enforcement is time constraint, i suggest that the time frame scheduled for the program should be extended to ensure proffer effectiveness as most law clinics are willing to ensure proper effectiveness but time remains an hindrance.
