My name is Ubasinachi Decency Nkume, a 400 level student clinician at Abia State University Law Clinic( ABSU LAW CLINIC ).
I am a member of the Aba prison department of the ABSU law clinic. I got my first experience of interviewing and counselling as a result of this Nulai project. When absu law clinic visited the aba prison for the purpose of interviewing inmates, i was reluctanct to go because of the fear of meeting accused persons whom i believed were criminals.
When we interviewed these accused persons, i was able to get their own side of the story. My impression changed particulary when i met a couple detained in prison with their 6 months old baby. They said that thier landlord accused them of stealing his properties and also disturbing him with midnight prayers. They have spent one year in prison as a result of this allegation. We finally decided to take up their case.
One unique benefits of this interview is that i was able to get first hand experience of that student-lawyer feeling, as i applied what i was taught by my lecturers to the interview process.
The Nulai project has exposed me to getting first hand view experience of human rights violation. We were also able to carryout human rights campaign at the public schools. Rather than waiting to be called to The Nigerian Bar, Today i can boast of securing the release of five inmates from prison.
