LEARNING AND REFLECTIONS BY BABAJAMU FAVOUR (UNILORIN)

400 Level
UNILORIN

The project which kicked off sometimes in June has in no small measure impacted me. To start with, I have learnt to face my fears and interact with unfamiliar people on a whole new level. Primarily because the project entails client counseling and interview sessions.

Although, I did find working in a team a little tasking as I always had to met up with deadlines so as not to draw the team backward in any way. Thus, I had to readjust my schedule and I soon learnt how best to work under pressure.

I recall the two occasions I joined the team on their visit to Oke Kura and Madala prisons. It was indeed an eye opening experience for me. I observed the unpleasant situations of the detainees and the immense flaws in our criminal justice system. Chief of which is the undue delay in administering justice.

However, I must state pertinently that the prisons were not as terrible as I had expected at least from the places we had access to. It was a lot better than the hell hole I had pictured and the prisoners looked well fed besides the degrading inhumane treatment they were subject to. Also, in a country like Nigeria where proper record keeping seems to be herculean to obtain if not impossible in certain cases, the efforts of the prison officials in having records though not perfectly detailed is highly commendable.

Although, I am yet to attend any court proceeding for any of the detainees, I have heard several relayed stories and I look forward to having my own firsthand experience.

The NULAI/OSIWA project has indubitably affected me as an aspiring lawyer and as an undergraduate student and I could not possibly be more glad to be a part of it at this time.
