Kabir Garba Hassan from ABU Law Clinic: Reflection

My name is Kabir Garba Hassan the director of litigation and probation ABU LAW CLINIC Ahmadu bello university Zaria Kaduna state and I am the group leader (group C). This project undoubtedly exposes me to wonderful experiences as a game changer, it makes my perception changed. hitherto I see every prison inmate as a criminal and a deviant who deserves to be abandoned by the society but now i know some are there (in prisons) for offenses they committed not. In this part of Nigeria (zaria and kaduna prisons) most of the inmates are not only awaiting trial but mistakenly/wrongly detained.
The case of a 16 years old road side mechanic ISHAQ MUHAMMAD confirms. He was caught in the web on his way to ''marmara'' zaria, arrested because he unknowingly passed through ''abductors camp'' some wraps of hard drugs were forced into his pocket, locked up in the cell for a day, taken to the court the next day and sentenced to 2 1/2 years imprisonment with an option of N250.000 fine.
On the other hand, a mob attacked a 33 years old BASHIR YAKUBU suspected to have raped a girl who could not even recognize him he lost consciousness and was rushed to ABUTH shika & subsequently detained at the police station samaru division where he was instructed by the police to plead guilty before the judge When Bashir requested that a genotype test be runned the victim's mother rejected and insisted that he used stick on the girl he was subsequently transferred to magistrate court Fada, from the chief magistrate court Chediya where he was first arraigned.
one thing I also noticed is that poverty is a factor that worsen the situation as some of the inmates are released on bail but no money to pay it up. Inmates like AISHA ABUBAKAR whose bail was granted but was unable to regain her freedom because she had no money and had lost contact with her family consequently, no one on ground to serve as a surety for her.
