Kabir Garba Hassan from ABU Law Clinic: Reflection

My name is Kabir Garba Hassan, Director of litigation and probation ABU law clinic Ahmadu bello university zaria Kaduna state I am as well the group leader (groupC). This project undoubtedly exposes me to wonderful experiences as a game changer, it made my perception changed. Hitherto, I used to see every prison inmate as a criminal and a deviant who deserves to be abandoned by the society but now I know that some of them are there for offences they committed not. In this part of Nigeria (zaria and Kaduna prison), most of the inmates are not only awaiting trial but mistakenly/wrongly detained.
The case of a 16 years old road side mechanic, Ishaq Muhammad confirms. He was caught in the web on his way to "Marmara" zaria, arrested because he unknowingly passed through "abductors' camp" some wraps of Indian hemp were planted into his pocket what led him to police station, later to the court and the court sentenced him to 2 1/2 years imprisonment with an option of N250,000 fine.
On the other hand, a mob attacked a 33 years old Bashir Yakubu suspected to have raped a girl who could not even recognize him, he lost consciousness and was rushed to ABUTH Shika and subsequently detained at the police station samaru division where he was instructed to plead guilty before the judge to which he denied. When Bashir requested that genotype test be carried out, the victim's mother refused and insisted that he used stick to carry out the act. He was later transfered to chief magistrate court chediya for prosecution.
One thing I also noticed is that poverty is a factor that worsen the situation as some of the inmates are released on bail but no money to pay up. Inmates Luke Aisha Abubakar whose bail was granted but was unable to regain her freedoms because she had no money and had lost contact with her family consequently, no one on ground to serve as a surety for her.
