I am Ojomolade Samson
Kehinde, a 400 level student of the faculty of law, Adekunle Ajasin
university Akungba-Akoko, a member of Akungba Law Clinic. my reflection
regarding the NULAI pretrial detainees project.
I was
opportuned to visit a prison for the first time when I went to Owo
prison, visiting Owo prison gave me a more vivid and real knowledge of
what a prison looks like and the kind of treatment given to the
prisoners, I have always imagined a prison to be some kind of hell where
the prisoners are subjected to a deplorable treatment and state of
living. The officials of the prison cooperated with us totally, and they
were willing to render their help where it was required and necessary
in order to enable the prisoners get access to justice. As a matter of
fact I was very impressed by the level of organization of things at the
prison. We had no issue with access to the Inmates and when getting
their Suit number.
My participation in the project impacted
my life greatly, as it enabled me exposure to the practical aspect of
law on a whole new platform. The chance given to me to interview some of
the Inmates afforded me the opportunity to learn some of the basic
skills of the legal profession, particularly, Advocacy and brief
writing, Counseling of Client, Documentation and management of file,
and so on.
It also gave me the opportunity to participate in
the Facilitation of access to justice for the prison's pretrial
detainees. Though there was stress and the sacrifice of time, the
experience and knowledge acquired is worth it.
