My
name is Abdulhameed kamaldeen, a 300LVL student faculty of law usmanu
Danfodiyo University sokoto. A member of the caliphate law clinic....
And my experience goes thus...
I had the opportunity to be
one of the clinicians who visited sokoto state prison service, for
interview and verification of inmates. I was able to interact with and
interview 2 of the inmates, who are awaiting trial, and I learnt and
gathered from the interview that, justice and freedom though paramount
are been denied to some innocents, so also their fundamental human
rights are been infringed upon. Because from the brief I received my
clients claimed to be innocent of the offences the were alleged of,
(even if it's otherwise), they are been punished grievously for a meagre
offence of which punishment is not up to what they have gone through.
I
am happy and feel privileged to have taken part in the prison
visitation because I now have seen that the less privileged whom are
victims of circumstances suffer a great deal of unfairness.
My
personal perspective about prison inmates before my visitation was that
each and every one of them is a criminal and guilty , but now. I have
come to realise and believe that not all of them are guilty, (and even
if they are) they have served more time than a convict with same case
should suffer,And I got to know that freedom was a gift.
In
my opinion, I feel a great deal of improvement will be achieved if all
the law clinics all over the nation can be supported and given the
boost to partake in the programs like this, also lawyers whom are
already called to the bar should be encouraged to take up a lot of pro
bono cases in service to humanity and courts too should be ready at all
times to assist whenever such cases appeares before theme in the
interest and service to justice.
