Mubaraka Olagunju, Caliphate Clinic
My name is Mubaraka Olagunju, student of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto and a member of the law clinic.
My experience from the visit of Kebbi prison was; I felt privileged and opportune to be one of the people to visit the prisons
I felt blessed to be free while some had to pay a price for freedom. It was an advocate visit so I was not privileged to interview the prisoners, but had the opportunity to ask the prison wardens one basic question that had been on my mind which was do the prisoners get conjugal visit and the answer was in the negative.
I learnt that people do not have proper access to justice or better still they do not know how to access justice.
I felt excited being a peer of the visit, because that happens to be my first visit to the prisons. It woke a part of my human senses that felt the need to contribute my small to humanity as a lawyer in the embryo as my lecturer likes to call us.
I always believed that only criminals are in prisons but from my visit I realized , that there are many innocent individuals in prisons who can’t afford a lawyer or do not have access to justice
In my opinion of how things can be improved is by-lawyer taking it upon themselves to help the innocent by doing pro bono and that it’s not every case that should go to court. Outside court resolutions should be effectively put in place not every case should go to court.
