Learning Reflections from Merife Chijiuba Michael-ABSU LAW CLINIC

  • THE GOOD INNOVATIONS: it's been such a great opportunity to effectively particulate in rendering free legal services to indigent clients, not forgetting the practical experience of interviewing clients to calling next of kin, remedying the plights of inmates, drafting of bail application and to such activity involved in clinic duty.

I am under Umuahia prisons department but have handled cases under Aba and Okigwe prison department respectively, all in a bid to render pro Bono services to inmate and in service to humanity in my little capacity.

My reflective experience was particularly with an interaction with a prison official during a visit to Aba prisons to get charge number and exact location of the court of arraignment of case mates charged with stealing, who clearly don't know where they were arraigned. Such approach was encouraging to me as I felt comfortable with words to get more particulars of my client from that official. It also encourages proper cooperation and enhances relationship between ABSU law clinicians and Aba prison official in rendering services to inmates.

Personally, platforms like this have helped me under the importance of rendering free service to inmates without legal representative to appear in court  to secure their freedom of movement and liberty. Also in consideration, it has given me a first hand knowledge of the practice of law especially to secure bail. And, I have had the opportunity of interacting with prison official not forgetting a view of life in prison due to visits.

I observed an issue of paper filing of the particulars of inmates which usually waste time and energy in searching for them when there's need for such. These files are covered in dust and looks untidy. This particular observation serves as a wake up call for the use of information technology in prison administration in general.
