I am Ekpe Eucharia ihunanyachi from Absu law clinic.
Working on the Nulai project so far has been such an experience. The case that I and my team are handling has personally exposed to a whole lot. In the sense that during the follow ups and advocacy I realised that some of the inmate has been abandoned by their families while others have been dumped by the police, I used the police because they are the ones that made the arrest and instituted the proceedings and after the magistrate has made a remand order the police officer who is in charge of investigation will never show up again.
Most of these
inmate are person whose family are struggling to survive and at the
mention of prison and court they lose interest. Yet another reflection
is on how bad our justice system is, for instance magistrates who
always make remand order do not ask for compliance there making the
prisons a dumping place. The police force also needs reformation because
they have caused a lot of promise in our society and the prisons
system. Most inmate are comfortable that they don't want to leave. And
most of them their case files are missing in the court.
