The NSUK Law Clinic started its prison visits at the Keffi Old Prison on Wednesday. During the visit 15 inmates were interviewed by clinicians. We realised afterwards that two of the inmates had their next adjourned dates for appearance in court slated for today (Friday) and yesterday. Our clinicians were in court to provide legal representation for both inmates with the aid of pro bono lawyers one of whom is an ex-clinician.

It has been a great learning experience so far.

However, the challenge noted so far is that inmates are sometimes not truthful with the status of their cases. It is therefore advisable to carry out verification at courts before next adjourned dates even though in our case we couldn't afford to do so.

Another issue is the need to have lawyers on standby before embarking on prison visits in order to avoid surprises.

Thank you.
